Tucson Rapid Transit #22

#22 in our collection, 2025

Background

In 1938, Tucson Rapid Transit was in a sorry state. Management asked Tucson Gas and Electric engineer A.E. “Gene” Magee to assess their operations and advise on how they could improve. Magee stayed on as superintendent until 1946, beginning a massive turnaround for the bus company. He had his work cut out for him: routes were poorly planned, equipment was run down, and the mechanics and service facilities were inefficient.

Upon becoming superintendent, Magee promptly began a program of equipment replacement by ordering new Yellow Coach buses. He improved maintenance facilities and out existing vehicles back into good running order. Heavier-duty parts were purchased, and an extensive preventative maintenance program was instituted. Bus drivers were put into uniform for the first time, had stricter employment requirements, and organized as a union. Routes and schedules were improved, and buses now had route numbers on the destination sign. Finally, as older vehicles wore out, they were replaced by more Yellow Coaches.

TRT #23 and #24 in service, 1941

Service History

TRT #22 arrived in Tucson in January 1941. Its rear engine meant it could carry 24 passengers instead of 21. It, along with the rest of the fleet, faced a massive influx in ridership when America entered World War II later that year. Magee’s regimen ensured the buses were running whenever possible, especially along the route leading to and from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

#22 remained in service until it was replaced in 1947 by larger and more powerful buses. It was sold to Warren-Bisbee Bus Line and ran in service there until 1954.

Post-Service History

After retirement, #22 was sold to the Cowan family, who owned a ranch near Elfrida, AZ. It remained on their property until 2017, when it was donated to OPT.

Restoration Status

There are no plans to restore #22 at this time, as it is very similar to the already-restored Warren-Bisbee #8 and provides an interesting contrast when they are side-by-side.
